Both boys and girls have breast tissue. Normal breast development first appears shortly after birth, and then again at the beginning of puberty. The timing of breast development varies greatly from one person to another and in some girls may not occur until well into the teenage years. Here's an overview of some of the main breast abnormalities that can occur in children. Baby girls and boys will have a small breast bud that can be felt for a few weeks after they are born. These buds of tissue will become the breast tissue in the adult.

The cause is not entirely clear but in some girls there seems to be a slight increase in estrogen production for a short period of time. The estrogen is what causes the breast to sprout. In the vast majority of girls who have this, the breast bud will shrink down again over a period of several months, or if it doesn't become smaller, at least it won't continue to enlarge. The other pubertal changes rapid growth, pubic hair do not occur. When I see girls with premature thelarche, I make sure I do a thorough physical examination, looking for anything that would suggest a more serious hormonal problem. If the rest of the exam is normal, then there is no need for any specific tests.

Any parent would worry if they saw signs of puberty in their toddler. But in reality, premature breast development in little girls is fairly common, with a peak incidence anywhere from 6 months to 2 years of life and the other around the ages of years. Studies have shown that premature breast development affects about eight percent of white girls and more than 20 percent of black girls under 8 years old. Premature thelarche is the medical term for early breast development in girls under 8 years old without any other signs of sexual maturation. Little girls with this condition will have the onset of gradual breast development over a several month period.
It started when we left the hospital three days after delivery. Initially I thought they would go back to normal, but now they have continued to enlarge and I am worried. What could be the problem? Jane Dear Jane, It is normal for babies to have mild or swollen, enlarged breasts or buds under the nipple. In the first few weeks of life, this is a normal manifestation of breast tissue that will later resolve spontaneously. It carries no consequence for future early breast development of the child during puberty.
